- Monarchs, a Negro league team. In 1945, he
- signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. After
- playing a season with the DodgersΓÇÖ minor
- league club in Montreal, he joined the big-
- league club. He had to overcome taunting by
- prejudiced players and spectators around
- the country. At the end of the 1947 season,
- though, he was named Rookie of the Year.

- Jackie was the National LeagueΓÇÖs Most
- Valuable Player in 1949. That season, he
- batted .342 and stole 37 bases.
